Your Student Pilot Certificate

You do not need one to take a Discovery Flight, and you do not need one to start training. You do need one before you fly solo — so it is worth starting early, because the paperwork moves at its own pace. Applications go through IACRA, the FAA's online system.

An FTN, from IACRA

Register on IACRA and it issues you an FAA Tracking Number. That comes before the application itself — everything else attaches to it.

Your instructor, in person

The application is finished face to face: a CFI checks your photo ID and signs it off. It is not a form you complete alone at home.

Citizenship screening

U.S. citizens bring photo ID plus a birth certificate, passport or naturalization papers. If you are not a U.S. citizen, TSA approval has to come through before training begins — start that first, not later.

Start your application on IACRA iacra.faa.gov — the FAA's own system. Opens in a new tab.

Do not worry about getting this perfect on your own — the application is finished with your instructor, and we walk every student through it. If you are not a U.S. citizen, talk to us before you book your first lesson: TSA approval has to be in hand before flight training can begin, and it takes time.
